Spider veins are treated here with a laser, not with injections. The laser’s light is absorbed by the blood in the vessel, which closes it. The body clears what is left over the following week. I perform the treatment myself, on the legs, trunk and face, after a consultation where we look at the veins together and decide whether laser is the right choice for them.

How I Treat Spider Veins
I use the Rohrer Spectrum laser. There are no needles and no injected solution — the treatment is light, applied vein by vein. I treat spider veins on the thighs, calves and ankles, anywhere on the trunk and on the face. Larger, bulging varicose veins are a different problem and need a vein specialist; if that is what you have, I will tell you at the consultation.
What to Expect
Small veins may fade soon after treatment. Larger ones often darken first, then fade over the following week. Complete clearing may take three or more sessions — a planning reference, not a promise, because veins vary and so do people.
A session is short. Around the nose, or elsewhere on the face, it usually takes five to ten minutes. On the legs it depends on how many areas we treat and how many veins there are in each — usually ten to thirty minutes. You can go back to work straight afterwards. Exercise depends on how comfortable you feel. Protect any treated area that sees the sun.
Numbing is not usually needed. Most people find the treatment easy to tolerate, and numbing cream is available if you would like it.
The next session waits until the treated area has fully healed, which should not take more than two weeks.

Spider veins are small clusters of tiny veins just below the surface of the skin, showing through as red, purple, or dark blue. They may look like fine lines, starburst clusters, or a web-like maze. They are more common in women, especially at childbearing age and older. You’ll usually find spider veins on the thighs, ankles, and calves, but they will also develop on the face or trunk.
What Causes Spider Veins?
Spider veins are tiny blood vessels just under the skin that have widened enough to show through. Why they form is not fully understood. In the legs they are often linked to the same problem that causes varicose veins — blood pooling under pressure because the valves in the veins do not close as well as they should, with gravity working against the legs all day — but that is not the whole story. Many people with spider veins have no problem with their larger veins at all.
Some things make them more likely:
Family history
Being a woman, and hormones — pregnancy in particular, with the risk rising with each pregnancy, and hormone medications
Corticosteroid use, as a cream or by mouth
An injury to the area
Long periods of sitting or standing
Carrying extra weight
Age — most adults develop some over a lifetime
On the face the usual causes are different: years of sun exposure, and rosacea. A few medical conditions can also cause spider veins, which is one reason I look at your skin at a consultation rather than treating on sight.

Do you treat varicose veins?
