Erbium laser resurfacing takes the damaged outer layer of the skin off in a controlled way, so that the skin that grows back is smoother and more even. It is a stronger treatment than a peel or a facial, with real downtime. It is not for everyone. How It Works
The treatment is fully ablative, not fractional: the erbium laser removes the outer layer across the whole treated area, rather than in dots, which is why the result is even and why there is downtime. I use the erbium handpiece of the Rohrer Spectrum laser. As the treated skin heals, it rebuilds from beneath. That new skin is what you see once the peeling has finished.
Is It Right for You?
Erbium resurfacing is a treatment I choose carefully. I do not usually use it on very dark skin. There are other reasons I might steer you towards something gentler — how much sun your skin gets, what you can arrange around a week or more of downtime, and what you are trying to improve. How many sessions you need depends on the condition we are treating, so I will not quote a number before I have seen you. If I am not confident it will give you an improvement you would notice, I will say so. We decide together.
The Day, and the Days After
A session takes thirty to forty-five minutes. Numbing may be needed, which adds time before we start, so allow for that when you book.
Downtime is about five to ten days, much like a sunburn. The skin is red at first, then turns brownish, then peels. You will see the new skin once the peeling finishes, and the texture keeps improving for weeks to months after that. Is it suitable for darker skin?
I do not usually use erbium resurfacing on very dark skin. At the consultation we look at your skin together and, if this is not the right treatment for you, we talk about what is.
Is this a fractional or CO2 laser?
No. It is a fully ablative erbium laser, not a fractional laser and not a CO2 laser. Fractional lasers treat the skin in dots and leave untreated skin between them; the erbium laser removes the outer layer evenly across the whole area.
