What is Cellulite?

Cellulite is a cosmetic skin condition involving the accumulation of fatty deposits under the skin. It presents as areas of dimpled or puckered skin, most often appearing on the thighs, hips, buttocks and abdomen. This condition affects nearly 8 out of 10 women over the age of 20, as well as some men. Women more commonly develop cellulite because of the way fat is distributed in the lower half of the female body. Cellulite appears to have a genetic component since individuals who have family members with cellulite are more prone to develop the problem.

Causes of Cellulite

Cellulite, may develop for several reasons, including such factors as:

Loss of skin elasticity due to aging
Weight gain, as during pregnancy
Poor diet
Fad dieting
Slow metabolism
Lack of physical activity
Hormonal changes
Dehydration
Excessive body fat
Type and tone an individual’s skin

What is Cellfina®?

It is estimated that 85% of adult women have some degree of cellulite. This condition occurs when thick, vertical collagen bands pull the skin down from its surface. The pulling exerted from these bands, called septae, make natural fatty tissue appear dimpled. Cellfina is an FDA cleared device used to reduce the appearance of cellulite using local anesthesia and a microblade technique.

How does the Cellfina® System work?

The objective of Cellfina treatment is to address the structural cause of cellulite, the septae that pull the skin down. During the short procedure, the tensed, vertical bands are severed to release the pull on the skin. Shortly thereafter, the skin bounces back to a smoother surface.

What are the benefits of Cellfina Cellulite reduction?

One of the most prominent advantages of Cellfina is that this procedure is clinically proven to achieve satisfactory outcomes. In one study, 95% of patients treated with Cellfina indicated continued satisfaction two years after their procedure.

Cellfina benefits include:

Results may continue for five years or longer
The FDA-cleared device has been tested for safety and efficacy
Minimally-invasive treatment achieves appreciable results
A little downtime is needed after treatment
One treatment results in smoother skin

What areas can be treated?

The FDA has cleared Cellfina for the treatment of dimpled cellulite on the buttocks and the thighs.

How long does the procedure take?

Studies indicate that Cellfina treats about 25 dimples in one hour. We schedule accordingly for multiple treatment areas or a larger number of corrections.

Medications to Avoid Prior to Treatment

A brief medical history and consultation are conducted prior to Cellfina treatment. This ensures that the patient is a good candidate for the procedure and that risks can be minimized. During the consultation, it is important to discuss all prescription and over-the-counter medications that are being taken. Doctors often recommend avoiding any medication that thins the blood before undergoing Cellfina treatment. Patients may also be encouraged to stop smoking for a few weeks before their procedure to encourage optimal healing.

What to Expect During and After Cellfina Procedure

The fibrous bands that cause cellulite run from the undersurface of the skin to tissue deeper beneath the dermis. The tension of some bands pulls skin inward, causing the surrounding fatty tissue to bulge, creating a dimpled appearance. Cellfina is based on the concept of subsection, a technique that is commonly used to treat certain types of scars.
The Cellfina handpiece is about the size of a needle. To begin the procedure, while the patient is standing, the doctor will mark dimples to be treated. A numbing fluid called tumescent solution is administered to the treatment area or areas. Suction is applied to one dimple, pulling tissue into a stabilized position. A microblade is then passed beneath the skin in a fanning motion to release the fibrous bands around that dimple. When the skin is released from suction, it appears smoother.

Is there any downtime?

As a nonsurgical, minimally-invasive procedure, Cellfina does not require general anesthesia or deep sedation. Treatment is well-tolerated using only a local anesthetic. Patients may be able to drive themselves home after their appointment and can expect to resume normal activities after 24 hours. Light compression garments can be worn to support healing. Exercise should be limited for three to four days, and patients should not swim or use a hot tub for about one week.

How soon will I see improvements?

Because Cellfina treatment releases the fibrous bands that cause dimples on the skin, patients may notice an improvement within a few days of their procedure. It is important to understand that swelling is likely to obscure initial results. Also, there may be a period of healing and settling after treatment. Patients can expect the appearance of the targeted area to improve progressively over several months. In some cases, patients still notice desirable changes at the one-year mark.

How long do Cellfina® results last?

As the longest FDA clearance for cellulite treatments, results many times last up to three years.
